April Women's Group
Spring has sprung! To celebrate, we will plant a starter herb garden and paint pots! We will meet at the Southwest Newcomer Welcome Centre at 7 pm on April 23rd, 2024.
There is limited availability, so register soon! We will provide small pots and seeds, but if you have pots or seeds at home that you wish to use, you are welcome to bring those as well.
Priority will be given to Permanent Residents and Welcome Centre Clients. Please contact the Welcome Centre if you need transportation to the event.
This event is for women over the age of 17.

Hear My Story - International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
You may have seen racism in your school, workplace and community. You can make a difference! Join us on March 21 from 5:30-8pm at the Great Plains College Gymnasium to hear the experiences of others and join the fight against racism by taking action!
The Southwest Newcomer Welcome Centre, in partnership with the Southwest Multicultural Association and the Great Plains College Students’ Association, is hosting an event to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. We will hear from panelists about their experiences with racism, and engage in meaningful conversations about how we can join the fight to rise against it. We will also enjoy a multicultural meal together.
Supper will be provided. If you wish to share a piece of your culture through food, please bring a dish to share!

International Women's Day Celebration

The Southwest Newcomer Welcome Centre, in partnership with Lucky Charlie's, will be hosting an International Women's Day celebration!
International Women's Day is on March 8th and we're celebrating! We will have free appetizers, karaoke, and pool; guest speakers, games, and door prizes! You won't want to miss this event, so bring your friends, coworkers, and any other women in your life to Lucky Charlie's on March 8th! This event is open to all women over the age of 19.
We are also sending a big thank-you to all of our funders (Gov't of Canada, Southwest Crisis Services, the Swift Current Small Business Centre, Standard Motors, Dunham's Tire Service, William J and Eva Byers, Bumper to Bumper, and Mercator Financial) who have made this night possible.
Trip to University of Regina
SWIS is planning a trip to University of Regina on February 23rd for students between Grade 10-12.
LIMITED SPOTS ONLY!! Please register as soon as possible if your child is interested. Please fill out one form per individual. Deadline to register was Friday, February 9th. Registration from now will be considered waiting list.
Students will be expected to be dropped off at the Newcomer Welcome Centre between 8:30am - 8:40am and picked up at 5:30pm.
Participants will spend the day in University of Regina with a guided tour by the university staff.
We will be transporting clients from Swift Current by a bus.
Date: Friday, February 23rd, 2024
Time: 8:30am - 5:30pm
Drop off / Pickup Location: Southwest Newcomer Welcome Centre
Age: Grade 10 - Grade 12
Deadline: Thursday, February 15th
Please pack water and money for the trip. Student will have a chance to buy their choice of lunch at a food court. Alternatively, student can bring their own lunch from home.
**Your seat is reserved only if you receive a confirmation email with the itinerary
*If you have to cancel the trip, advice your SWIS worker ASAP so we can contact the clients on the waiting list.
*If a participant is sick on the day, parents will notify their SWIS worker immediately via text, phone call, or email, and keep their child at home.
Family Skate Day
EVERYONE IS WELCOME!!!
The SWIS program is hosting 2nd skate day from 1:00pm - 3:00pm on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, 1pm - 3pm. Please remember to bring your own skates and dress warmly. Helmets are strongly recommended.
If you don't have any skates, please contact your SWIS worker, and we will see if we have extra skates in the Welcome Centre. Sizes are varied with limited skates.

Speed Friending!
Are you between the ages of 18-30? Are you wanting to make new friends your age? Then this is the event for you!
Speed friending will take place on February 12, 2024, at 7pm at the Newcomer Welcome Centre. This event will be a fun-filled night with the purpose of getting to know new people and making new friends! This group will meet every other month.

November Women's Group
Join us on November 21, 2023 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm for a clothing Swap & Shop. Invite your friends and bring your reusable bags for a fun evening of sustainable (and free!) shopping and good company!
Do you have clothes/accessories/jewelry in your closet that don't fit or that you just don't wear as much as you thought? Please indicate so below, and Faith will contact you to arrange the drop-off of your clean, undamaged items. Any items that do not get claimed at the end of the night will be donated, so please be mindful to give items that are in good used condition. We ask that any items that are stained or in need of mending be left at home. If you don't have clothes that you would like to give away, don't worry! We have received a donation of new women's clothing as well, so there will be lots to go around!
This event will be hosted at the Southwest Newcomer Welcome Centre. The items will all be displayed for easy browsing and our bathrooms will be available for try-ons.
This event is open to all women over the age of 16. Childcare is not provided.

Maple Creek Family Photo Sessions
For the past three years we have been able to offer Mini Photo Sessions to our clients at events in Swift Current. This year, we are excited to partner with the Jasper Cultural and Historical Centre to offer a similar session in Maple Creek!
Please join us for a visit of the Jasper Centre and use the form below to book your time for a mini photo session. We will provide a professional photographer to take photos of you and/or your family. We encourage you to wear traditional or cultural clothing for these sessions. There will also be a photographer taking candid photos of all families enjoying the displays and touring the Jasper Centre.

Our April Women's Group features Community Futures Southwest teaching us all about dreaming, starting and running our own business! You will learn everything you need to know about running a business and what supports are available.

Easter Egg Decorating
We are pleased to offer this Easter Activity for participants of all ages!
Ages 5-11
This group will work on basic egg decorating and make baskets to hold their works of art! be sure to wear clothes that may get stained. Everyone is certain leave with colourful fingers!
Ages 12 and up
This group will work on Pysanka egg decorating. This traditional Ukrainian way of decorating eggs requires a lot of patience and fine motor skills. Artists are always amazed to see the design revealed at the end!
January Women’s Group - Cookie Decorating
Tatiana Makguigan will teach us how to take simple cookies to the next level. She is a very talented cookie artist that uses flooding, piping and painting techniques to create cookie masterpieces! All women are welcome to join this class.

Independence Day of Ukraine Flag Raising Ceremony
We would like to invite everyone to join us in recognizing the Independence Day of Ukraine on August 24th. His worship, Mayor Al Bridal, will join us along with many new and long-term community members from Ukraine. The short ceremony will be followed by refreshments at The Newcomer Welcome Centre.

Kayak Clinics
We are pleased to partner with these organization to offer Kayak clinics in Swift Current and Shaunavon. Each clinic will offer 30 minute sessions throughout the day. All equipment will be provided including lifejackets.
August Women's Group - Henna Tattoo Class
Mehendi Soul Artist, Malavika Rejimon, will teach us about the Henna Tattooing. All women (ages 16 and up) are welcome to join us.

Our women’s group meets once a month for activities and socializing. For April we are pleased to learn the Ukrainian art of Pysanka. Our Instructor Dru Diduck will guide us through the steps to create a basic egg while learning some of the history around this custom.
