Language Help

English and French are the dominant languages in Canada. In Saskatchewan and most of Southwestern Canada, English is spoken by virtually every citizen. Because of this, it is important to make sure that you’re able to understand and speak the language of your new community. Learning a new language can be challenging but we are here to support you.

English lessons for newcomers to Canada

Improve your English language skills through the Welcome Centre.

While we don’t provide language classes through the welcome centre, we do emphasize the importance of learning and improving your English skills through many of our programs. In addition to their explicit purpose, our Women’s Group, Newcomer Senior Circle and Sports Club are all designed to help level-up your English language proficiency. That means, while you’re engaging with your community through sports, as an example, you can be working on your English speaking and writing skills.

English classes for adult newcomers.

While the Southwest Newcomer Welcome Centre doesn’t provide its own English language training for adults, there is an organization in the southwest that does. Great Plains College is a decentralized regional college that offers post-secondary certificates, diplomas and degrees. They’re focused on meeting the needs of learners, employers and communities.

Great Plains College’s English Language Training program offers newcomers the opportunity to focus on employment readiness and language development skills for the workplace. This includes resume, cover letter and interview skills, courses and certifications for employment, cultural values for the workplace, work placement opportunities and general language acquisition skills.

This class is available for permanent Canadian residents and offers a variety of options for class times to better accommodate your schedule. Most importantly, there are no tuition fees for this program. It is completely funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Immigration & Career Training.
