SWIS - Settlement Worker In Schools

SWIS is a school-based outreach program designed to help newcomer students and their families settle in their school and community. SWIS connects newcomer families to services and resources in the school and community order to promote settlement and integration. The program also serves as an additional support to schools by promoting cultural awareness and understanding.
  • Provide workshops to students, parents, or school staff on a variety of topics (Canadian culture, cultural sensitivity, etc.)
  • Refer clients to community organizations and other available services; enhance timely and effective access to community services
  • Provide information to clients about school bus services
  • Arrange meetings with family and school staff (to discuss specific and individual issues) and follow-up
  • Promote family involvement in the student's school life
  • Connect with students on an on-going basis
  • Attend school registration to assist newcomer families
  • Attend school staff meetings at least twice a year and provide information about the SWIS program
  • Explain the essential school information and refer clients to appropriate school staff, as necessary
  • Arrange for interpreters for student-led conferences, as needed
  • Encourage newcomer youth to take part in extracurricular activities within the community
  • Provide home visits as required
