Learn to Camp Day

Fun program to provide information to newcomer families on the basics of camping and to have fun in the beautiful Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park.

Purpose: To introduce people to the camping experience.

Date: June 8th, 2013.  2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Schedule: 1:45 – 2:00 PM.  Arrive at the Goodwin House (when travelling from Swift Current, turn left at the bottom of the big hill. We are located in the stone house “Visitor Centre”)

2:00 PM – Introductions

2:15 – 3:45 – Nature hike.  Learn about the different plants, animals, and geology of the park.  The Prairie Vista Trail we will be hiking is considered a beginner trail but is approximately 2km and should take 1.5 hours. We encourage all ages to attend, but please make sure everyone is in proper physical condition to walk/be outdoors for this amount of time.

3:45-5:00 – Workshop on tent setup, camp stove operations and campfire building.  We will also cover how to book a campsite, fishing license, and where to get camping supplies with approximate costs. This will be held at the Sagebrush Amphitheatre.

5:00-7:00 – Supper with hot dogs, bannock (traditional First Nations bread), and s’mores cooked over the firepit.

Things to bring:

  • Proper footwear (running shoes or hiking boots)

  • Water bottle

  • Sunscreen/hat/sunglasses

  • Camera (optional)

  • Mosquito spray (Make sure it works for ticks too!)

A tally of attendees by June 6th, 2013 would be required for us to acquire proper amounts of food for supper.  Please email us the number of people attending and any food allergies or special dietary needs.

Rain may cause a damper on things.  We’re prepared to go on the hike unless there is lightning but that is also up to the attendees.  The workshop can be operated indoors at our amphitheatre.  Supper may be modified to cook stove dinner if fire cannot be started.

The park entry fee of $7.00 per vehicle and the cost of supper will be covered by the park. There is no cost to attend.

This program was launched to provide information to newcomer families on the basics of camping, and hopefully for these families to enjoy and experience camping

Again, families are encouraged to participate.  If you are joining this exciting adventure, please contact us before June 6 at 306-7786262 or reply to
